SSC BIG BAND - YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE

SSC BIG BAND - WONDERWALL

Jahreskonzert April 2017

Man, this one song

was so great, I loved it, how the bass kind of did the groove, and the drums, too......and the sax was also okay.

A friend of mine

Hey,

can you play something I know?

Undersound (2004-2007)

UNDERSOUND - WEAK MOMENT

Mail & Guardian, 18 Nov 2005

The debut album of local hard-funk purveyors Undersound attests to their increased attention to detail and professionalism since they hit the circuit just more than a year ago. The songs are clearer, crisper and executed with precision. The contagious, bouncy sounds of the vibrant outfit should have any fan of that funk-laden local rock sound tapping their feet throughout the album. Think of locals Dorp or Boo! meet ska-funkers Sublime.

Financial Mail, 9 Sep 2005

After all those sickly boy band and pop and rock groups, it’s a treat to hear a committed funk –inspired outfit such as Undersound. Its CD, Undersound (Telesto Tel0010105), has a no-holds-barred attitude – and its musicians are blasting their way onto the local scene. For variety, Undersound incorporates a little disco guitar on “Darkside”, a dollop of reggae on “Too many police” and a cooler dance band outing on “Cuban cigar”. Cutting-edge university radio stations have already seen the potential of the band  and are playing the CD. The group has also been booked to perform at many festivals in the coming months. Dad, if you’re buying a Jazz CD for yourself, get this for the kids.

Every so often someone will say to me: `You absolutely have to hear this band!´ Usually it´s the latest flavour of the month, but every so often it is an absolute gem........Buy this album!

What do you say of an album that reminds you in its multifaceted textures of the 1980s proto-Goth group Bauhaus, at other times of the jazz masters and sometimes of Tom Waits?....Four out of five stars for this original debut that reflects the full spectrum of emotions, undersound’s debut is angry, eerie, joyful and funny in all the right places.

For a band that was only officially formed just over a year ago undersound have wasted no time in making waves cross the notoriously fickle Joburg live music scene. Their unique blend of funk, dub, jazz, hip hop, ska and reggae has already seen them scoop the honours at the R.P Studios Emerging Sounds competition and their band-to-watch-out-for status has been secured through gigs at Woodstock 05, the Warpfest Rock Festival, Roxys, The Bassline and The Showcase, to name but a few.

The other major event of the evening features Johannesburg-based funk stars undersound at Die Tapphuis, a superb live band venue. Having experienced undersound live in Bloemfontein (of all places) in the middle of winter, all I can say is they are sure to warm up any crowd. They also recently won the coveted RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition, no mean feat as the top Jozi bands battle it out for this one.

It’s like the people’s choice of funk.

So the saviours of the night came from other quarters, most notably Undersound.
